Copy Editing
Light (technical) editing
- Proofread your work and check your spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- Make sure the text is accurate and consistent.
- Check all headings, subheadings, captions, list numbers and numbered headings have been set up with the correct font style (e.g. bold, italic).
- Make sure any numbers in lists are consecutive and that bullet lists are indented.
Medium (structural)
- Proofread your work and check your spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- Edit to level 1, above.
- Check the consistency of any headers, subheadings, titles, etc.
- Make sure that your work fits your style guide
- Make sure your work is addressed to your audience and is written for its intended purposes.
- Check the continuity of the plot, setting and character traits in any fiction manuscripts, and querying any discrepancies.
- Change passive voice to active voice, if requested.
- Check for ambiguous or incorrect statements.
Heavy editing
- Proofread your work and check your spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- Edit to level 2, above.
- Eliminate wordiness, generalisations, vagueness and any inappropriate jargon.
- Make sure the text has flow and clarity – I will move and change sentences where necessary.
- Check the tone and focus.
- Check the texts structure and tenses.
The lists above are meant to serve as a general framework for you to consider when you examine your own work. Your individual needs will determine the level of editing required, thus a discussion is always necessary beforehand to determine this.
